hey, now!
the director/editor
it’s a foreign way to shoot, for most crews, when your director also happens to be the one putting it all together. i have been an editor longer than i have been a director. at 16, i was lucky enough to have an avid in my house (friend of a friend of a friend). from a very early age, i learned how to assemble an edit. prior to this, i would simply shoot everything in order - because i had no outlet for a true post workflow.
it’s odd being on set and have the crew question whether or not you “got what you needed”. the tendency is to overshoot, as the post team is seldom involved in the production. it’s typically a hand-off, so you want to be sure, that whatever poor schmuck ends up with this viz at the end of the day, it works. i’ve also cut the picture in my head as i went along - often times, down to the sequence or frame. i’m notorious for cutting scenes entirely, or adding new ones i feel will work better. it’s how i “direct” unconventional, perhaps, but it’s how i work.
as people become more multi-disciplinary, it’s not outrageous to expect this kind of direction. for me, i’d rather squeeze in another shot or two with the time i save on a heavy production day by omitting shots that are excessive and/or irrelevant.
i’m really excited about this latest project. it’s not a film, a music video, or anything else you’ve ever seen. it’s a completely personalized filmic experience. the @Trapeze team has a lot of work ahead of them … but this one is sure to turn some heads.
